How a Word Ladder duel works

  1. 1One ladder for both

A fresh pair of words is made for your match. You and your friend build a ladder between exactly the same two words.

  2. 23-2-1, go

The race starts the moment your friend opens the link: a shared countdown, and both of you see the two words at once.

  3. 3Climb from either end

Work up from the bottom, down from the top, or both. Their bar shows how many steps they have climbed.

  4. 4Par matters

Every step your ladder takes over par adds five seconds to your time. Hints are off in a race.

Who wins?

Both finish

The lowest time wins: from the shared start to your joined ladder, plus five seconds for each step over par. Times are measured on our server.

A long ladder

Still counts, but each extra step costs. A quick ladder one step over par can still beat a slow one on par.

Someone leaves, drops out for 15 seconds, or makes no move for a minute

The other player wins straight away.

Want another go?

Either of you can offer a rematch: one tap, two new words, a new 3-2-1.

How to beat your friend at Word Ladder

Start from the hard end

Words with few neighbours are easier to reach than to leave. Climb from the friendlier word toward them.

Watch the green marks

They show which letters already match the other end. Keep those, change the rest.

Vowels open doors

Changing a vowel often turns a dead end into a dozen new words.

Use the keyboard

On a computer, type and press Enter; Tab switches ends. Much quicker than tapping.

Why Word Ladder is made for 1v1

Word Ladder is a puzzle Lewis Carroll made popular in the 1870s: change one letter at a time to turn one word into another. Head to head it becomes a race of vocabulary and nerve, because both players have the same two words and the same par, and the first to join the ladder wins.

Every Word Ladder 1v1 gets its own fresh pair of words, and both players get exactly the same ones. Every rung is checked on our server, which counts the steps over par itself, and the time is measured there from the shared start, so a win is a real win.

Races are live. Send the link, keep the page open, and the moment your friend opens it you both get the same 3-2-1. If someone leaves mid-race or stops playing, the other player wins, and either of you can call a rematch in one tap. It is free, it runs in any browser, and nobody needs an account: just a name.

Prefer to play alone? Today’s daily Word Ladder is the same for everyone, with its own leaderboard and streak.

Word Ladder 1v1 questions

Can I play Word Ladder against a friend online?

Yes. Tap “Challenge a friend”, send the link by WhatsApp, text or any app, and your friend gets the exact same two words. Keep the page open: the race starts the moment they open it.

How is the winner decided in Word Ladder 1v1?

The lowest time wins. Your time runs from the shared start to your joined ladder, and every step over par adds five seconds.

Can I climb from both ends in a race?

Yes, exactly as in the daily. Switch ends as often as you like: only the finished ladder counts.

Does a 1v1 match use the daily ladder?

No. Matches use their own fresh words, so racing never spoils today’s daily or touches your daily streak.

Is Word Ladder 1v1 free?

Yes, completely free in your browser on phone or computer. No download and no account: your friend just opens the link, picks a name, and plays.
