    How to play Reaction Time

    …→…
    ✓

    Wait on red

Tap the panel to start. It turns red: wait. Nobody knows how long, and every round waits a different time.

    ✓

    Tap on green

The moment it turns green, tap. Your reaction is timed to the millisecond, and the next round starts by itself.

    …→Too soon!
    ✕

    No guessing

Tapping before green, or within 100 ms of it, is a false start: the round goes again with a new wait. The third false start ends the game.

    Beware decoys

Midweek and at weekends the panel can flash blue or purple first. That’s not green: don’t tap. Your score is your average over 5 to 7 rounds.

    About Reaction Time

Tap the moment it turns green.

Reaction Time is the simplest test there is, and one of the hardest to get good at. The panel turns red and waits. The moment it turns green, you tap. Your reaction is measured to the millisecond, and your score is your average over the day’s rounds.

Everyone gets the same waits on the same day, so the leaderboard is a fair race of pure reflexes. You can’t guess your way to a good score: tap before green, or so soon after it that nobody could have reacted, and it’s a false start. The round goes again, and three false starts end the game.

Early in the week it’s five clean rounds of red and green. Midweek there are six rounds, and the panel sometimes flashes a decoy colour before it turns green. Weekends bring seven rounds and more decoys, so you have to be quick and keep your nerve.

    How to play

    1. Tap the panel to start. It turns red: wait.

    2. When it turns green, tap as fast as you can. Your time shows, and the next round starts by itself.

    3. Tapping before green, on a decoy colour, or within 100 milliseconds of green is a false start. The round goes again with a new wait.

    4. The third false start ends the game, so don’t gamble.

    5. Finish every round and your average reaction is your score. Quicker means more points, and each false start costs some.

    Tips & tricks

    • Tip 1

Watch the middle of the panel and keep your finger resting just above the screen, or on the space bar.

    • Tip 2

Don’t try to count the wait: every round is different. React to the colour, not to the clock.

    • Tip 3

Decoys are blue and purple with a hand on them. Only green has TAP on it.

    • Tip 4

A wired mouse or keyboard and a fast screen help a little. Being rested and focused helps a lot more.

    Questions

What is a good reaction time?

Most people average between 200 and 300 milliseconds on a test like this. Under 200 is very quick. Your device adds a little too, so compare your scores on the same phone or computer.

Is it the same test for everyone?

Yes. Every player gets exactly the same waits and decoys each day, so the leaderboard compares reflexes on equal terms.

What counts as a false start?

Tapping while the panel is red, tapping a decoy colour, or tapping less than 100 milliseconds after green. Nobody reacts that fast, so it must have been a guess.

    How are points calculated?

An average of 180 milliseconds or quicker scores the full 1000. Every millisecond slower costs a little, each false start costs 100, and harder days are worth up to double.
