Put the tiles in order

Colours, peeks and par

Tiles are coloured by the row they belong in, and they light up when they’re home. Hold Peek at goal to check where things go. Beat the day’s par move count for top points.

About Slide 15

Slide the tiles back into order. Every move counts.

Slide 15 is the classic “15 puzzle”, the sliding-tile game that swept the world in the 1880s. Fifteen numbered tiles sit in a 4×4 frame with one empty space. Slide tiles into the gap, one row or column at a time, until they read 1 to 15 in order with the gap in the bottom-right corner.

Every day brings a new scramble, the same for everyone, so you can compare move counts with friends. Each scramble is checked to be solvable (half of all random arrangements aren’t) and never starts close to finished.

Early in the week it’s a quick 3×3; midweek the classic 4×4; weekends bring a big 5×5 for a proper workout. Tiles are coloured by the row they belong to, and you can peek at the goal whenever you like. Practice mode deals a fresh board whenever you want one.

How to play

  1. Tap any tile in the same row or column as the gap. It slides into the gap, pushing the tiles in between along with it.

  2. On a keyboard, the arrow keys slide the tile next to the gap in that direction.

  3. Put the tiles in order: 1, 2, 3… left to right, top to bottom, with the gap last.

  4. Each tile that moves counts as one move. Fewer moves and a faster time score more points.

  5. Hold “Peek at goal” to see where every tile belongs. Restart sets the board back to the scramble.

Tips & tricks

  • Tip 1

Solve the top row first, then the second row. Once two rows are done on a 4×4, never touch them again.

  • Tip 2

Place the last two tiles of a row together: park the last tile below its spot, slide the second-to-last in beside it, then bring both up in one turn.

  • Tip 3

When only two rows are left, solve them column by column from the left, pairing the top and bottom tile of each column.

  • Tip 4

Tile colours match rows. A red tile always belongs in the top row, an orange one in the second.

Questions

Is every puzzle solvable?

Yes. Exactly half of all possible arrangements of a sliding puzzle can never be solved, so every daily scramble is checked with the classic parity rule before you see it.

What is “par”?

Par is a rough target move count for the day’s scramble, based on how far every tile starts from home. Finish under par and you keep all your move points; each move over par costs a few.

Does sliding several tiles at once count as one move?

No. Every tile that moves counts, so a slide of three tiles is three moves. It’s just quicker to do.

How are points calculated?

Fewer moves and a faster solve both score more. The bigger weekend boards are worth up to double. Solve the daily on consecutive days to build your streak.
