How to play Hue Shift

✓

Blend the colours

The goal is a smooth gradient: every tile sits between the colours of its neighbours, like this finished board.

Dotted tiles stay put

Tiles with a dot are already in place and can’t move. Use them as your guide: the colours flow out from them.

✕

Swap to fix

Two tiles here are in each other’s place. Drag one onto the other, or tap both, to swap them.

Every swap counts

The fewer swaps you use, the more points you get, so look before you swap. Undo takes back a swap, and a hint moves one tile home (you get 3).

About Hue Shift

Swap the tiles until the colours flow.

Hue Shift is a calm colour puzzle. The board is a grid of tiles that should blend smoothly from one colour to the next, but most of them have been shuffled. Swap tiles two at a time until every one sits between the colours of its neighbours and the whole board is one smooth gradient again.

A few tiles carry a small dot: they are already in the right place and never move, so they are your guide. Early in the week the whole frame is pinned and only the middle is scrambled; by the weekend the board is bigger and only a handful of tiles stay put.

A new board unlocks every day at midnight in your time zone, and everyone gets the same colours and the same scramble. Practice mode gives you unlimited extra boards.

How to play

  1. Look at the dotted tiles first: they are fixed and show where each colour belongs.

  2. Drag a tile onto another to swap them, or tap one tile and then the other.

  3. Keep swapping until every tile blends smoothly into its neighbours.

  4. Use Undo to take back a swap. Stuck? A hint moves one tile home.

  5. The board is solved when every tile is in its place. Fewer swaps and a faster time score more points.

Tips & tricks

  • Tip 1

Work from the dotted tiles outward: a tile next to a pinned one only has to match that one colour.

  • Tip 2

Sort by lightness first. Find the lightest and darkest loose tiles and put them near the light and dark corners.

  • Tip 3

Fix one row or column at a time. A finished line makes the next one much easier to read.

  • Tip 4

Squint or lean back from the screen: a tile that is out of place often jumps out more when you see less detail.

Questions

How do I play Hue Shift?

Swap tiles until the board shows one smooth gradient. Drag a tile onto another or tap two tiles to swap them. Tiles with a dot are fixed in place.

Is Hue Shift hard for colour-blind players?

Every board changes in lightness as well as colour, from light at the top left to dark at the bottom right, so brightness alone gets you a long way. Hints can move a tile home when two colours are hard to tell apart.

When does the new Hue Shift come out?

A new board unlocks every day at midnight in your local time. Everyone who plays on the same date gets the same colours and scramble.

How are points calculated?

Faster solves score more. Every swap beyond the fewest possible costs a little, and each hint costs more. Weekend boards are worth up to double.
